In 1885, Shri Hiralal Kavyopadhyay of Dhamtari, on the request of George Grierson, composed the grammar of Chhattisgarhi dialect. In 1890,George Grierson translated this book into English and published it in issue 59 for the General of the Asiatic Society of Bengal under the title A Grammar of the Dialect of Chhattisgarh (Chhattisgarhi Grammar) in the Central Provinces.

Later, Pandit Lochan Prasad Pandey revised the book and got it republished in the name of A Grammar of the Chhattisgarhi Dialect of Eastern Hindi in the year 1921 by CP and Berar Government. It is also to be remembered here that Pandit Kamta Prasad Guru’s Hindi Grammar of Hindi was published in the year 1910 while Shri Hiralal Kavyotpadhyay’s Grammar of Chhattisgarhi dialect (Chhattisgarhi Grammar) was published 20 years before that i.e. in 1890.

Chhattisgarhi is a language or Dialect ?

The great saint of India had said – National language is the identity of the nation and mother tongue is the identity of the state.

Chhattisgarhi is the mother tongue of Chhattisgarh which is the contact language of the people. Chhattisgarhi (Chhattisgarhi language) is the language of common behavior of the employees working in the Haat Bazar, Court, Hospital and Office of Chhattisgarh.

Despite this, Chhattisgarhi is not included in the 22 languages included in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. As a result, Chhattisgarhi is still considered as a dialect due to lack of recognition at the national level.

We can say that in spite of having all the qualities of the language in Chhattisgarhi (Chhattisgarhi language), today Chhattisgarhi is valid only as a dialect.

Chhattisgarhi has been declared as the official language of Chhattisgarh state by the Official Language Amendment Bill 2007.

Its main objective is to include Chhattisgarhi in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, to preserve and promote the language literature of Chhattisgarhi, so that it can be recognized as a language throughout the country.

Chhattisgarhi writing script

Devanagari, the most accepted and popular script of the country, is used to write Chhattisgarhi. As propounded by the Central Hindi Directorate, Government of India, Chhattisgarhi will never face any problem due to the enhanced Devanagari.
